I am a volunteer for Time to be Welcome. Bruno, who has been a volunteer with the project for almost a year and a half, recruited me to be part of the team.
Why are you here?
I am here because I decided it was time for me to do more for the rights of migrants and refugees.
Favourite moment on the project so far?
My most precious experience so far was taking the psychological first aid training. It was the first time in my life that someone taught me how to react when witnessing someone in distress. It seems inconceivable today that I didn’t know about this earlier because with this knowledge I could have helped people in my professional but also in my personal life. So thank you Time to be Welcome and thank you Nadine and Barbara for the training.
Your proudest moment?
I’ve thought a lot about this question when I say a lot I mean bloody ages… And still haven’t come up with anything. There are a lot of things that I am proud of but they don’t translate into moments. There wasn’t one big crossroad or obstacle. No « this is a life changing decision ». I am proud of myself. I am proud that when I was a child I wasn’t afraid of authority so that I could climb out of the school and run towards the parking where the wind had blown away my friends Pokemon cards and bring them back to him so that he would stop crying. I am proud that I didn’t back down from reporting the abusive behaviors of one of my superiors. I am proud to be here to have done what I said I would. So no big proudest moments I’m afraid.
My strengths are my will-power and my adaptability.
How do you relax?
I relax by taking some alone time. I always need a moment in the week or in the day to be alone. It’s a time where I read or write or watch a movie, a documentary, a serie. Sometimes I draw or sometimes I play music. It isn’t really about what I do but more about being able to take the time to press pause and relax.
If you had a theme song, what would it be?
My theme song is « If you want to sing out » by Cat Stevens. The song starts with the strumming of a guitar and your head starts bumping up and down. And then come the lyrics « Well if you want to sing out sing out and if you want to be free be free cause there’s a million things to be you know that there are ». Have you seen the film « Harold and Maud »? It’s a love story between a fifteen year old boy who likes to stage suicidal deaths and a seventy-nine year old carefree women who makes the most of her time on earth. Funny as hell and beautiful at the same time. Anyway this song just makes me want to sing out and dance.
If I were a film character, who would I be?
Hardest question so far. Had to ask my friends and family and they were absolutely no help. This is a random list of there answers : King Arthur, Chewbaka, Sam from the Lord of the Rings, Obi Wan, Ratatouille, Princess Mononoke, Fiona from Shrek, Karen Blixen in Out of Africa.
